Used Car Prices Drop 3.2% — But the Real Story Is What Dealers Aren't Saying
The BLS used car index just posted its third straight monthly decline. Meanwhile, gas at $3.15/gal is reshuffling what people actually want to buy.
The Big Picture
The used car market is in its most interesting phase since the pandemic price spike. The BLS Consumer Price Index for used vehicles has dropped roughly 3.2% from its 2025 peak, and wholesale auction prices are falling even faster. But walk into a dealership and you might not feel it — because the decline is concentrated in specific segments while others remain stubbornly expensive.
What's Moving
Used car prices are falling — selectively. The CPI index for used cars and trucks has declined for three consecutive months. But dig into the data and you'll see the drop is heavily weighted toward large SUVs and pickup trucks. With gas at $3.15/gal and trending lower, you'd expect truck demand to hold — but the real pressure is coming from a flood of off-lease vehicles hitting the market simultaneously.
New vehicle incentives are back. After three years of "market adjustments" (dealer-speak for markups), new car inventory has normalized. The new vehicle CPI has flattened, and manufacturers are offering 0% financing on select models for the first time since 2022. If you have strong credit, the new car market is more competitive than it's been in years.
Gas prices are helping buyers. Regular gasoline at $3.15/gal is below the 5-year average. This takes pressure off the fuel-efficiency premium — you don't need to pay extra for a hybrid when gas is cheap. It also means those discounted trucks and SUVs on dealer lots are cheaper to own than the sticker shock suggests.

The Bottom Line
If you're buying used, focus on the segments where prices are actually falling: full-size SUVs, pickup trucks, and luxury sedans. These categories have the most inventory pressure and the most negotiating room. Avoid compact SUVs and economy cars — demand remains strong there and prices haven't budged. For new cars, the return of manufacturer incentives makes this the best buying environment since 2019. Get pre-approved before you walk in.
